Re: Deploy Windows Servie Packs with VCM Patch Management

$

Adding support for service packs has been reviewed historically on a case by case basis.  Patching in VCM has always focused primarily on Security updates and not necessarily functional updates.  Other components within VCM accomodate this.  That said, it should be quite feasible for our content team to deliver support for W2K3 SP2 within the next 3-4 weeks.  An enhancement request has been entered for this.

Achieving continuous availability with View

I am not a VMWARE expert. I am implementing a NetApp storage solution. All started before my employment. A requirement of the project to implement View was continuous availability. 2000 users with virtual desktops on tablets, etc. Hospital environment.  Could someone please offer some suggestions on how this might be achieved because right now - I don't see a way to avoid interruption. VMWARE HA + Metrocluster + Snapmirror does not get me there. Then I wondered about VMWARE FT - but possible disk requirements might make this impractical.  Any suggestions?

Re: Need Help!! Configure VMWare View Client with HP Thin Client

May be It's not a best way to do this, but you can autorun bat-file instead of View Client. Something like this:

start /wait /MIN /D "C:\Program files\VMware\VMware View\Client\bin\" wswc.exe
shutdown /l

Add some keys (-serverURL, -userName, etc) in the end of first line.

Just a quick note. Thin provisioning is a feature of the VMFS file system and tools like hotcopy are not aware of this and only "see" the provisioned file size rather than the currently used disk space.

Hi,

Use this KB to collect the running task information

We are using both actually.  The USB less so than then SVGA, but for the application we're using turning off either isn't an option.   At least we have an idea of what is going on now.  Thanks for the info!

I'm in this same situation.  Took the I.C.M. 4.0 Class in April 09, slacked off a while, and then Passed the VCP4 exam on Feb 10th.  I sit for my VCP5 exam on the 29th.  My study material consists of Upgraded 4.X lab to 5, bought the Mastering vSphere 5 (IMO the best thing out there), and studied the vSphere 5 docs.  Whether or not I pass, its worth the shot at $225 rather then paying $1500 + time off from work for the 2 day class. Just my opinion.

Thank you for all of your help on this.  Here are the files you requested.  I am trying to learn more about VMware, what are you looking for in these files? I would like to know so I am able to work on it as well.

Re: cannot configure vcloud director to create dv port group with IP Hash teaming

I understand the issue. But cannot help you.

In our infrastructure we have a need that vcloud director provisioned port groups should have promiscious mode "accept" because we are virtualising ESXi servers for demo and training purposes. Unfortunately I haven't found a way to set default properties for vcloud director created portgroups.

One work around you could use is to have your vapp and organistation networks use "port grouped" network pool. I guess you are running VCD-NI or VLAN backed. If you are running "port group" backed you define your own portgroupds up front. And you can define them with IP hash.

Error backing up VM - [VM_Name]-flat.vmdk file

Hello all,

I am using VMWare v5.0 and after creating two VM's, in one of them i am not able to copy the [VM_Name]-flat.vmdk file to outside server or even inside same server but different datastore. The copy tentatives were done with the virtual machines off and the destination had sufficient disk space (file is 350GB).

This were the tentatives (the error appears after 16GB of data are copied so stucking at the same point or disk block):

- inside VSphere copy from ESXi server datastore to another server in LAN:

the error was: "Expected FILE_DATA message. Got: SESSION_COMPLETE"

- Veeam Backup & Replication copy from ESXi server datastore to another server in LAN OR copy from ESXi server datastore to same server but different datastore:

the error in the two tentatives was "Failed to copy item 'nfc://conn:192.168.20.139,stg:4f049610-27b8d8b6-7732-00e08143427b@FTPServer2/FTPServer2-flat.vmdk' Error: Client error: Received unexpected message [4] from server.

Failed to retrieve next FILE_PUT message. File path: [[datastore1] FTPServer2/FTPServer2-flat.vmdk]. File pointer: [16994795520]. File size: [375809638400]."

- SSH access to ESXi server and copy from one datastore to another:

the error was "cp: read error: Input/output error"

This seems to be a corrupt file or disk problem. I also tried to run chkdsk (WinServer2008 VM) but did not solve it.

Without the backup this machine is useless and a lot of work will have to be redone. Is there any way I can solve this?

Thanks for your time

Any more information that you need please ask.

Does anyone think its feasible to replace toughbooks in police cars with a tablet (iPad or Android) connected to a view client?  Has anyone heard of someone doing that?

Hey all,

Last night was my first meeting and I really enjoyed it. Thanks to all of those who helped put it together and the free food was AWESOME!

It was nice to meet all of you and learn more about the VMware environment. I know someone mentioned that the forum is a ghost town so I figured we should get it going again. Look forward to the next meeting.

It's ARP(Address regulation protocol) and RARP (Reverse Address regulation protocol) which convert MAC to IP address and Ip address to MAC.

Rights needed to connect from Converter 4.0.4 to ESX 4.0.1 host

$

We have 14 ESX 4.0.1 blade servers and vCenter 4.1 running about 250  development and production VMs. Periodically there is a need to make an  escrow of a vCenter VM in Workstation format to send to the escrow  company. As the vCenter and ESX admin I have been doing that with  Converter. Due to corporate structure changes there is a need for  someone else to make these copies. The designated person has installed a  copy of Converter but when he starts it and tries to create the copy  the connection to the server fails.

The user has  Administrator rights in vCenter on the blades in the engineering  cluster. Does he also need to have a login to each ESX host? And if so,  what are the minimum rights he will need?

As the people who will be doing this have no experience with Linux or UNIX, do not want them to be able to mess with ESX.

Thanks

What is 'nc -z' meant to show/prove? I don't think it's verry usefull as it won't show output either way...

Does a telnet from the SQL application server to 192.168.19.127 1521 still return "no route to host"?

1 Company, 3 Sites, 1000 servers .... and IP Subnets ....

$

I have a Customer with 3 sites, around 1000 servers, and I am all setup with 8 Collector Servers to do a CA on all of those.

All 8 of my Collectors are members of the same Domain, and are in the same Site.

A> I have 1 Collector doing the Domain and Site where it resides in.

B> I have 2 Collectors set to scan about 230 servers in another site, and the servers they are scanning are members of another Domain.

C> I have 5 Collectors set to scan about 700 servers in another site, and the servers they are scanning are members of another Domain.

PROBLEM:

In B> I set it up so that certain vlans or subnets are going to one collector, and then the rest of the subnets are setup on the OTHER collector.

Under the NAVIGATION console, I set up under IP SUBNET a new group that specified just one particular subnet. I set it up so that it was looking at 10.1.100.0/24     Then i went under Admin / options / modules / discovery, and under IP SUBNET i put that same information in again.

you would THINK that meant that it would limit its scanning to just that one subnet???

It appears that in order to manually select DISCOVER SYSTEMS, that it first wanted to have me run DISCOVER DOMAINS.

So now, when I run DISCOVER SYSTEMS, it discovers ALL OF THE MEMBERS OF THE DOMAIN, and not just the desired subnet.

and in the GROUP IP SUBNET - there were no systems listed. I manually pinged a bunch of servers, and they were from all sorts of subnets. I even found a couple servers that BELONGED in that subnet, and they were not included in the GROUP IP SUBNET.

Any Idea's???
