Thanks for the suggestion, but it does not seem to work: I tried setting bot CC=gcc, CC=/usr/bin/gcc and CC=/usr/bin/gcc-4.4, but I always get the same results.
I think there might be some other command used by the vmware-config-tools perl script that does not work as expected in this version of linux...
