My virtual machines are currently on box A. All the configuration and virtual hard disks are on this machine. I would like to migrate them to my new server running Ubuntu. Both machines are running VMware Workstation 8. Because Box A is my primary storage device for my network, I would like to keep the virtual hard disks on this machine, and but want the processing done on Box B (Ubuntu machine).
What is involved in doing this? Can I just copy over all my vmx and configuration files to Box B and leave my virtual hard disks on Box A? I know I will have to update the scsi0:0.fileName field in the vmx file. This field can take a UNC path correct? For example:
scsi:0.fileName = \\BoxA\VirtualDisks\VM\vm.vmdk.
Box A has 4 2TB Samsung Spinpoint F4 EcoGreen in RAID5 in it. What kind of performance hit will I see storing the VMs on a remote machine? My LAN is Gbit.
Thanks,
Tony
