vm not showing as offline in vcenter server 3.5

I got a problem on my ESXi 3.5 server farm.

I tried to shutdown one of my vm. Which was fine since it reached a black screen and my Windows in the vm seemed to be shut down correctly.

But in the vCenter server the vm is still shown as powered on. No matter what i try on it (shutdown, reset, clone), i get an error message stating another process would be running.

I checked the ESXi server according to this article:

There are no process running from the vm so it should be down.

Even restarting the vcenter management server process does not resolve this issue.

On the host i see on going messages "cannot stat /var/run/vmware/tickets/..."

How can i get the vcenter server to recocknize the vm as being offline so that i can access it again?
