Deleting files within the virtual machine does not decrease the size of the .vmdk files. With the sizes you mentioned however, I'm with Dave and think this could be an issue with snapshots. Please post a screen shot of the VM's folder in the datastore browser showing all the files with extensions, sizes and time stamps.
