How to take configuration back up of ESX4.0

Hi

I have upgraded vcenter server from 4 to 5. Now i am upgrading ESX 4.0 server

How to take configuration backup of ESX 4.0 server. Please provide the path where the configuration files available and also please provide what are the steps needs to take before the ESX5.0 upgrade?
