Can anyone recommend and cheap NIC thats fully compatible (and tested) with esxi 5?
For fully supported NICs you will need to find one on the compatibility list. However, since this is a lab you may want to take a look at e.g. an Intel PRO/1000 GT network adapter. It's not on the HCL but it's known as working and inexpensive.
