I'm going to have a go at this tonight. I got a reply back on the support ticket I had opened on this (sooner than I would have expected), and they recommended much the same approach, although they did not say to remove the replica entry via the command line.
They did remind me to not only remove the View Connection Server software from the replica but also the AD LDS instance.
Anyway, thanks. I will update as to how it went.
