Just did the update from 3.1.1 -> I have lost my Ethernet (?)

First off - no one make fun of me for waiting so long to update - I am a creature of habit.

Anyway, I decided tonight go ahead and do the update  (to 3.1.3) after finishing up some work in Windows, so I downloaded the  update - let it run its course and everything looked fine. However I  noticed that I had lost my LAN connection and it was also saying that the VMware tools were out of date.  The latter I didn't worry too much about because when I clicked on VIRTUAL MACHINE it said UPDATING THE VMWARE TOOLS.

I then clicked on Virtual Machine and tried to  reconnect the LAN connection but nada.  As for the VMware tools I'm not  sure if they installed either because it is showing UPDATE VMWARE TOOLS  now.  When I click on that it then gives me a pop up that tells me to 'click  install to connect the CMware Tooks installer CD to this Virtual  Machine'  If you do not see VMware tools installing, run "setup.exe"  from the virtual CD-ROM drive in the guest.  - I have hit install/repair here so I assume anything it is going to do it has done.

Now, back to my LAN connectivity problem

If I go to VIRTUAL MACHINE->NETWORK ADAPTER->CONNECT NETWORK ADATPER

I get an error about "/dev/vmnet8".  See the attached screen shots (sorry about the size).

Anyone got any suggestions here as to what might have happened or rather how to fix it?

I'm running Windows XP Pro SP3 on OS X 10.6.8

Thanks

- Brad
